4th graders made their annual trip to the State Capitol Complex and Cultural Center. Students toured the capitol building, visited the statues and monuments on the grounds, watched a video about John Henry, and explored the cultural museum. The WV Cultural Center houses the West Virginia State Museum and a State Theater, among other state offices and resources. It is the headquarters for the West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History, and a central location for events, exhibits, state archives, and historical preservation.

Fire Prevention Week is an annual event in early October that educates the public on fire safety and commemorates the 1871 Great Chicago Fire. The event has been officially sponsored by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) since 1922 and is the longest-running public health observance in the U.S.

Our very own Ripley Volunteer Fire Department spent part of their day educating students at RES on fire safety. They were wonderful guests and our students enjoyed their visit!

Clouds form when warm, invisible water vapor rises, cools, and condenses around tiny specks of dust or salt in the air. These tiny water droplets or ice crystals cling to the specks, eventually joining together to form a visible cloud. The more water droplets there are, the bigger and heavier the cloud becomes, which can then lead to rain. In Mrs. Gwinn's reading class, students experimented with how clouds form and why it rains. The students read an informational piece then watched as the clouds became heavy as they added colored water droplets to their cloud to see it fall through.

Humans have been telling stories for as long as we've had language. We've told stories to pass down knowledge and culture. Fairy tales generally tell us moral lessons. Tall tales bring exaggerated stories to people for entertainment. The 2nd grade classes have been learning about fairy tales and tall tales. Today, they dressed as their favorite characters from these stories. The halls were filled with fantastical characters like Cinderella, Belle, Johnny Appleseed, and more!

Our school counselors are important members of the school community. A school counselor in West Virginia provides comprehensive academic, career, social, and emotional guidance to students, focusing on individual and group counseling, crisis intervention, and the development of a healthy school environment. Recently Miss Tina read a story and complete a lesson with students in 4th grade. They created book marks with positive messages. We appreciate our counselors!

Good evening,
Tomorrow, Jackson County Schools will join districts across the state in celebrating West Virginia School Service Personnel Day. This annual observance, recognized by the Governor's proclamation, honors the essential contributions of all service personnel staff who work tirelessly to support students and maintain the day-to-day operations of schools.
West Virginia School Service Personnel Day is an opportunity to recognize the individuals who are instrumental to the success of our students and the smooth functioning of our schools. These dedicated professionals include bus drivers, cooks, custodians, maintenance workers, aides, secretaries, and more.

Our school service personnel are a critical component of our school system. They ensure our students have a safe, clean, and welcoming environment to learn in, and they provide the support that allows our teachers to focus on instruction. Their hard work and dedication often go unnoticed, but they're absolutely vital to everything we do.
Jackson County Schools encourages all students, parents, and community members to take a moment to thank these staff members for their unwavering commitment. Whether it's a simple thank you note, a kind word, or a gesture of appreciation, every effort helps show our gratitude for their critical role in our educational community.

RES 4th graders spent the week exploring body systems. They investigated the connection between muscles, bones, and tendons and created a robotic finger. They also examined their hands and wrists and created an X-Ray of their hand to create a piece of spooky season art!

Students in Mrs. Spears' 5th grade class learned that matter is made up of particles too small to be seen. They created "hot air balloons" to study how particles expand and contract. They learned that these particles are in constant motion. When air is added, it increases the number of gas particles inside the balloon. They collide with the balloon's inner surface more frequently, exerting pressure and causing it to stretch and inflate.

Good evening, this is Will Hosaflook, Superintendent of Jackson County Schools. I'm excited to welcome you on Tuesday, August 19th, to a new school year filled with promise and anticipation.

It's important to take a moment to celebrate our recent accomplishments. Jackson County Schools continue to be a leader in academics across the state. Last year, our fifth-grade students—now sixth graders—ranked number one in West Virginia for English and Math on the General Summative Assessment. Fairplain Elementary is now a top 10 elementary school in the state, and seven of our eleven schools achieved their highest academic marks ever in English or Math. This is a tremendous achievement and a testament to the hard work of our students, staff, and community.

We are truly blessed to have such dedicated employees, supportive communities, and remarkable students. I firmly believe in the power of public education to provide hope and more opportunities for our students than any other form of schooling. We accept the high standards we're held to every day, knowing that our commitment to accountability sets us apart from other options. Thank you, parents, school employees, and community members, for making Jackson County a great place to learn and grow.

This year, your child's opening day packet will include a letter explaining new legislative laws as well as hard-copy forms you need to return to school. Digital forms are available on our website. As always, I appreciate your patience on the first day of school as we work to make everything run smoothly. Thank you for your continued support and encouragement as we begin another exciting year.
Have a wonderful evening.
